Engineering decisions of the past brought Liverpool to pre-eminence as the second city of the British Empire. Engineering also solved the problems created by unprecedented population density, sanitation, and the needs of international transport of people and goods.


Every significant piece of architecture has engineering at its core, and it is engineering that enables or limits the architect in what he can produce. In many cases it is the engineering function itself that dictates the form of a building.


Liverpool has many significant ‘Firsts’ in engineering, including the first City or Borough Engineer, a post that on inception could only be held, by law, by a qualified Civil Engineer.
